چکیده

In Ancient Southern Mesopotamia (now Iraq), rainfall was never high enough to sustain agriculture, so for thousands of years people used a system of canals to irrigate their fields. These canals, built up over generations, have long formed the basis of settlement patterns and state relations in the region, making their location and mapping of key interest to archaeologists. However, since 1991, western archaeologists have not been allowed into Iraq, and consequently have been unable to conduct ground surveys. This work focuses on automating the detection of these critical irrigation canals. Owing to a process of silt deposition, the canals gradually raise their banks above the surrounding plain. Using free elevation data collected by NASA in 2000, we use a combination of image filters and tracing algorithms to detect and highlight the ancient canals, quickly scanning an area for archaeologically relevant details. Our method was generally successful in detecting very large and old canals, but data noise and resolution prevented the detection of smaller features. Ancient Irrigation Canals Mapped from Corona Imageries and Their Implications in Juyan Oasis along the Silk Road

Historical records and archaeological discoveries have shown that prosperous agricultural activities developed in the ancient Juyan Oasis of northwestern China, an important oasis that once flourished on the ancient Silk Road. However, how the irrigation canals were distributed in historical time was unknown. Here, we identified and mapped the spatial distribution of ancient abandoned irrigatio...

Performance Evaluation of Two Strategies of “Lining” and “Automated Operation” in Reducing the Water Conveyance and Distribution Losses within the Main Canals, Case Study of Moghan Main Canal

Seepage losses and poor operational activities are the two main source of water losses throughout the agricultural water conveyance and distribution systems in irrigation districts. This study aims to investigate the performances of two strategies of “canal lining” and employing the “Canal Automation” in order to reduce the losses mentioned above. The investigation was carried out on a couple o...

DESIGN OF MINIMUM SEEPAGE LOSS IRRIGATION CANAL SECTIONS USING PROBABILISTIC SEARCH

To ensure efficient performance of irrigation canals, the losses from the canals need to be minimized. In this paper a modified formulation is presented to solve the optimization model for the design of different canal geometries for minimum seepage loss, in meta-heuristic environment. The complex non-linear and non-convex optimization model for canal design is solved using a probabilistic sear...
